Poul Nissen, Ph.D.

Dr. Nissen is a Professor of Protein Biochemistry at Aarhus University, Denmark where the sodium pump was first discovered in the 1950's. Dr. Nissen leads the PUMPkin Centre of excellence at Aarhus University.  His research focuses on the molecular structure and function of such ion pumps and other membrane transporters as well as their clinical importance. His pioneering thought process is exemplified by his recent writings on the expanded importance of protein pumps with particular interest on the protein-protein interactions they appear to manage. He has published over 130 articles including 15 in the prestigious Journals Nature and Science. Dr. Nissen received his PhD in Molecular Biology from Aarhus and performed his post-doctoral fellowship at Yale University.
